1895 War Memorial Park: Filling neglected plot with life
C3 Magazine #429
2024年1月10日
A 315,000m2 park on the site of a former cemetery, previously a no-go area, hemmed in by a road and concrete perimeter of a canal. The transformation has created a sense of community cohesion by focusing on the memorialization of a historic local battle, while providing access to green space and amenities for citizen. Here too, water from the existing canal is channeled into the park, creating an ecological diversion that engages citizens with nature.

THE DARK LINE
CREATION OF AN ECO-HISTORICAL ROUTE BETWEEN MUDAN AND SANDIAOLING – TAIWAN THROUGH THE SANDIAOLING TUNNEL AND A NEW FOOTBRIDGE ATTACHED TO THE CLIFFS OF THE KEELUNG RIVER GORGE
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Japanese administration undertook a colossal railway project to transport coal from the mines operating in this mountainous area in North-East Taiwan.
When the mines closed, tourism became the main economic asset of the region.
New Taipei City initiated a program to network the old historical trails and abandoned industrial sites.

It has been necessary to carry out important works to allow the opening to the public of this itinerary: going through a tunnel subject to possible landslides, installing a walkway on the ground, "without touching it", building a complex structure on a vertical and unstable ground,... and all without cutting any trees.
The challenge was to make it as discreet and "natural" as possible.
L’ARCHITECTURE EN PRISE AVEC L’IDENTITÉ TAÏWANAISE
